The Church of the Most Holy Mary of Riguardo and His Holiness Pope John Paul II

A few years ago our District promoted the restoration of the Church of the Most Holy Mary of Riguardo, which people in San Quirico commonly call "the Small Church of Riguardo"; our aim is to give new life to this important place of devotion, set along the track of the ancient Via Francigena, in a position which dominates the landscape around it. We have up to now mangaed to obtain all the licences the law requires, and works should begin soon, if fundraising makes this possible. We also explained our purpose to the Secretariat of His Holiness Pope John Paul II who very generously honoured us by granting us His Apostolic Blessing, on the occasion of the Great Jubilee of year 2000.

Our Captain Paolo Saletti has also had the honour to meet the Holy Father personally on the 4th of March 2000 during the ceremony "La Porta del Cuore" in the Pontificio Seminario Romano Maggiore at the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome.

Whoever wishes to give his contribution - both financial or through voluntary work - to help restore the Small Church of Riguardo as soon as possible, can contact our Captain (paolosaletti@canneti.it). We have arranged to present all those who contribute with the sum of at least 50 Euro the gift of a print, made by the well-known senese artist Oreste Rinaldi in a limited edition of 198 copies.
